Essential Question

How can we be sure that mythical creatures do not exist?

An Essential Question is…

An essential question is a question that causes a person to use their imagination and expand their range of knowledge on a subject. It is not usually a yes or no type of question because they are simple and straightforward; that is the opposite of what an essential question inquires. An essential question also refers to more than just a specific passage or book. For example, in class we read a story. Once we finished the story, our professor asked us to write down an essential question after explaining what it is. The main point that we were asked to keep in mind is that an essential question needs to be a single question with many resources for answers, and not just come from a single source, here being the story. Essential questions are important because they assist in expanding someone’s thought process and inquire that you look deeper for the answer than you would for, an example, a literal question. For example, I worked on a project where I had to read an fictional fairytale. I chose Rapunzel and explained how she was taken from her original parents by mother Gothel. My literal question would be along the lines of “where did mother Gothel keep Rapunzel for most of her life?” versus my essential question that would be more along the lines of “what are the advantages and disadvantages of giving a child away for adoption?” Here, the answer to the essential question can come from between the lines of the fairytale, but also come from other sources that hold a similar or more complex answer(s).

Scott Pilgrim vs. The World

Scott Pilgrim vs. The World was a very difficult movie to follow along to. The basic concept from the movie that I could understand was that it’s about a guy who falls in love with a girl, but he has to fight off her exes to win her over. Other than that, I didn’t really understand the movie all too well. There were different climax scenes that made no sense to me, the movie was full of characters that had names that were hard to remember, and just over all, I had to watch the movie a couple more times to really understand everything that was going on. Also, because I was so confused about what happened, the flow of the movie was out of control. I was left wondering what happened in the last scene that I couldn’t grasp the next one, and so on. Although, I hardly understood anything going on in the movie, it was still interesting to me. The visual effects were great, and I enjoyed the fight scenes even though I hardly knew what happened by the end of it.

Questions About Reading Importance

September 13, 2018

Why is it important to ask questions while you are reading?

I can only speak from personal experience, and the answer I would give to this question is to gain information about what you are reading. For example, if I were to read a fictional book, I would ask questions about the characters like who are they and what their importance is to the book. I would also ask where the setting takes place. Lastly, I’d ask what the plot of the book is. I would say that you can refer to these questions for answers that contain background information you can obtain and keep in mind while reading. All of this can then bring up questions about other things within the book. It’s all a learning process. You ask questions to learn about the contents of the book. As you ask questions, and you get answers, you’ll begin to ask more and more questions. This helps you learn the importance of what you are reading rather than being lost.

Self Discovery

Tuesday, September 11, 2018

In class today, we took a survey to assess our strengths. Looking around the room, I can see that everyone’s are in different order but roughly the same. My three strengths begun with self (intrapersonal), musical, and nature (naturalist). I think the last one is a bit of a stretch because it says how much I like being outdoors and working in “my” garden. However, I’d rather be inside with my dogs and… I don’t… have…. a garden. I would, however, go out for a nature walk just to appreciate all that it has to offer. I also really love animals, and I would spend all my time with all sorts if I could. The other two outcomes were pretty accurate though. I’d like to think I have a great sense of self, and that I listen to what’s being told to me rather than interject when I’m talking with a friend or family member. It’s helpful when being asked for advice, and you want to know the every aspect of what the other person would like advice on. I also do like working on my own, but that doesn’t mean I can’t work in a team setting. I just find comfort and serenity in being alone. Nothing wrong with that. I also really love music. I like to sing, to myself, when I’m at home doing dishes or cleaning my room, or if I’m just relaxing. I wouldn’t say I use music to learn lessons from my classes, but that actually seems like a good idea to me. Maybe I’ll start using it.

Always Remember.
